A Parang Story...

Since it is the week of Christmas and though Trinidad Carnival 2007 is drawing near, I thought I would keep us on track and share the joys of the beautiful Christmas season in Trinidad.

As a child I remember having huge Parang Parties at my house. Some one hundred or so invited guests would make their way to my home, all spilling out into the road dressed for the occasion with "deh belly in deh han". Some food my mother cooked and some was catered from only the best. We talking Christmas Ham with hot fresh hops and chow chow, freshly made sorrel, ginger beer, ponche de creme, pastelles (beef, chicken and fish), black cake, pomcethere chow, roast pork, turkey, shark and bake, smoke herring, bake and buljol and so much more I can hardly even recall all of the food.

But besides the food, there was a spirited parang band lead by a Spanish Asia looking Venezuelan man that was the toast of every parang party. He belted the tunes out so loudly that he would have to sip honey and lime after each set, but of course he spiked that concoction with a little white rum to taste. He was always drunk and sounded even better when he was drunk, what memories! A good time was always had by all because the Parranderos played all night and only stopped for a small bite to eat.

Dancing went on all night as well or until the food ran out, but there was always enough to go around for each person at least 10 times. De alcohol never ended, we had to beg people to go home but really and truly I never wanted anyone to leave.

This party was one of the highlights of the Christmas season and a fond memory that will live in my memory forever.

This reminds me of parang parties of the past. - Enjoy!

Final Word: No Savannah Stage for 2007 Trinidad Carnival
Minister of Culture Joan Yuille Williams announced the following today:
  • The Jean Pierre Complex will be used for Dimanche Gras, including judging of King and Queen and other Calypso competitions previously held at the Savannah.
  • Mas will be on the streets; judging points are Down Town, Piccadilly on the Greens, Queens Park Savannah South (in the vicinity of Princess Building Grounds) and Adam Smith Square. Victoria Square will not be used but bleachers will be constructed for spectators.
  • Panorama prelims will be judged in the panyard, semi-finals at the South Western end of the Savannah entering by the Paddock and exiting on Dundonald Street. Finals will be held at Skinner Park in San Fernando.

What is one to do, de mas will still go on and we will still have a time. It is going to be very sad not to cross a Savannah stage because for several masqueraders it is the climax of the parade of bands on Monday and Tuesday.

The one positive thing is that spectators of Carnival will not have to venture into the Savannah to see most of the bands because it will be the ultimate street Carnival for 2007.

Meet de
Brent Richardson was born in Trinidad & Tobago. As a young man, Brent began playing the steel drum in high school. His early influences included Jazz Musicians such as Lionel Hampton and George Benson as well as Steel Drum Musicians such as Othello Molineaux; Len "Boogsie" Sharp; Robert Greenidge and Ken "Professor" Philmore.

After becoming the high school band leader Brent went on to join one of the most prominent Steel Drum Bands in Trinidad and Tobago, Vat "19" Fonclaire Steel Orchestra where he performed for the first time abroad at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York and The Du Maurier Jazz Festival in Toronto, Canada.

He also recorded on Fonclaire Steel Orchestra's Pan Jazz album.
Brent then went on to join the TCL Skiffle Bunch Steel Orchestra where he performed throughout Europe and Asia. After returning from tour Brent decided to form his own band, Pantastic International Steel Band where he performed in Japan and Walt Disney World in Florida. In 1996, Brent ventured on into the cruise line industry where he performed on various cruise lines (Carnival; Holland America and Princess Cruise Lines). During this time he developed his
vocal ability which puts him in a category of being one of the few Steel Drum players that can both play and sing.

Although influenced by jazz music, Brent’s repertoire consists of (Reggae; Calypso; R&B; Caribbean Jazz; Soca; Bossa Nova).

Brent "Islandman" Richardson has release two new Soca tracks for the 2007 Trinidad Carnival season. The frist entitled "Bacchanal" and the second "We Like It" both tracks written by Anderson Cupid and produced at the Kleen Kut Studios in Burbank, California by Mr. Clinton Crawford.

Both tracks have a classic feel and a catchy "move yuh waist" kind of vibe. Brent has put his experience into these Soca tracks and it shows.
