Bizarre Foods - Trinidad and Tobago on the Travel Channel
Recently the Travel Channel series Bizarre Foods by Andrew Zimmern featured foods from Trinidad and Tobago and I was pleasantly
surprised by how close to accurate everything was portrayed.
Some of his comparisons for a largely American audience were a bit far off,
like the tambarin sauce he referred to as the local ketchup but for the most part it was on the money and Trinibago
represented well on the Internationally broadcast program. Some of the foods considered bizarre included: curry iguana with
dumplings, bake and shark, cow hell soup, pig foot and chicken foot souse, cow skin soup, doubles, liver and goat roti, fresh
curry-brown conch .
I will tell you something, I must have led a very sheltered life in Trini
because I am not shame to say that I never before heard of Cow Skin soup before now. Can anyone relate or is it just me?
Take a look at the first clip in the 6 clip series here (the full show is
1 hour long):
After years of work a new Steelpan is born. The G-pan includes a tenor pan which features 37 notes instead of 29 and three
full octaves rather than the two and a half octaves of the tenor.
There is also a pan which will replace all of the
pans now needed in the midrange line up. The G-pan consists of three drums with 36 notes each.
With this development
the bass will eliminate the need for four, six, nine and twelve bass pans in an orchestra.
The G-pan was developed by a team of engineers and musicians at the University
of the West Indies' St. Augustine Campus. The G-pans are in the process of being patented. Source: Trinidad Express
The Dwight Yorke Stadium
car park opens tonight with a celebration of folk art, culture and history of Tobago.
In the 1980's Dr. J. D.
Elder conceptualized the festival in response to the Trinidad oriented Prime
MinisterBestVillage
competition.
Many Tobagonians even after
20 years look forward to the 20-day event which ends on August 1st with the Emancipation Day parade. The "Ole Time Tobago Wedding" is the most well know of all the festival's highlights.
Where else in the world
could something like this happen? Well imagine my surprise when I hear that there is a warrant out for the arrest of 2 of
T&T’s most loved Soca artists Machel Montano and Mr. Slaughter.
It is alleged that Mr. Slaughter
and Machel Montano assaulted a San Fernando man on Carnival Monday night almost a year and a half ago.
Mr. Slaughter says that
it is an absolute lie and decided to turn himself into the St. Clair police station on Tuesday afternoon, July 10th.
Upon entering the police station he was told that they were unable to locate the warrant so he would have to return at a later
date.
Do you believe this madness?
De man do the right ting and dais what dey go tell de man? Unbelievable yes! I say de police need to pick up de man when de
find de warrant. If I were Mr. Slaughter I would not bother to trun myself in a second time. Classic Trini style.
