Happy Diwali, Divali, Deepawali
To all my fellow Trini Hindu friends Happy Diwali to you all. I hope you
are able to celebrate to the fullest and enjoy this day. I hope we don't ever take for granted the fact that we are able to
freely practice our faiths in Trinidad and Tobago. Bless!
Here is a little information about Diwali for you taken from the always present
and most times all-inclusive Wikipedia: [Diwali, Divali,
or Deepawali, (also called Tihar and Swanti in Nepal) (Markiscarali) is a major Indian and Nepalese festive holiday. What started as a harvest festival in ancient times, became
associated with many legends and became a significant festival in Hinduism and some of the other faiths which originated in India - Jainism and Sikhism. Today it is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the globe as the "Festival of Light," where the lights or lamps
signify victory of good over the evil within every human being. The festival is also celebrated by Buddhists of Nepal, particularly
the Newar Buddhists.]
In Trinidad and Tobago,
communities all over the islands get together and celebrate the festival. One major celebration that stands out is the Divali Nagar, or Village of
the Festival of Lights. It features stage performances by the east Indian cultural practitioners, a folk theatre featuring
skits and plays, an exhibition on some aspect of Hinduism, displays by various Hindu religious sects and social organizations,
nightly worship of Goddess Lakshmi, lighting of deeyas, performances by various schools related to Indian culture, and a food
court with Indian and non-Indian vegetarian delicacies. The festival culminates with magnificent fireworks displays ushering
in Divali. Thousands of people participate in an atmosphere devoid of alcohol and in a true family environment.
What would Diwali be without the right food. I found this blog entry by the Trini Gourmet that talks about some of the foods surrounding this Hindu Festival of Lights. It even includes a video of Parata Roti
and Curry being prepared. Enjoy!

Now for the Real Results of TnT Elections
The PNM (People's National Movement) is once again victorious with 26 seats, UNC-A with 15 seats and COP with 0. Despite a gallant effort by all parties Prime Minister Patrick Manning is going
to keep his post. I certainly hope he can show us what he is made of this time around and work for the people.
5 more years says a grinning Patos. From a record 993,052 people registered to cast their ballots, more than 550,000 turned
out yesterday. Bas and Warner both retained their seats in Couva North and Chaguanas West respectively.
Despite rumblings that this election would be violent, Trinbagonians showed
the world that we can peacefully elect a leader. Now on to Developed nation status by 2020. Onward and upward because "Together We Aspire, Together We Achieve".
